About six months ago, I was thinking about some of the challenges faced by orthodontists on a daily basis. Naturally, there are cases in which the teeth don’t move the way you expect them to, cases where teeth are missing or impacted, and cases with severe crowding of the teeth, all of which can challenge your diagnostic and treatment planning skills, but thankfully, although we do see these things, they are not typically daily issues. It occurred to me that if I could put my finger on the one thing that keeps me up late at night it would be… drum roll please… patients who do not consistently wear their elastics.
We live in the selfie age. Selfies of our toes on the beach. Selfies with our BFF’s. Selfies with our pets. What could be next? Dr. Lance T. Vernon at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine suggests that it could be tooth brushing! A study by Dr. Vernon indicates that using your smartphone to make a video of your brushing technique could improve the skill with which one brushes. As an orthodontist, I am in complete agreement with Dr. Vernon when he states that “dentists and patients (need to) focus more on prevention, rather than on fixing problems once they occur”. On the day that the braces are removed, I want to see both a beautiful AND a healthy smile that is not marred by decalcification (white or dark) marks on the teeth caused by poor brushing. If selfies are a way to prevent that, I am all for it! Say cheese!

I think it’s safe to say that all of us want to look as young as we feel. How can orthodontics help? I’m so glad you asked! The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) is the world’s oldest and largest dental specialty organization. The AAO sponsors research to enable its members to provide the highest quality of care to our patients. Orthodontists receive an additional two to three years of specialized education in orthodontics beyond dental school at an accredited orthodontic residency program. This makes orthodontists uniquely qualified specialists who diagnose, prevent, and treat dental and facial irregularities in patients of all ages to correctly align teeth and jaws.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to surprise your team for the second day in a row… Can it be done??? How could such a thing be accomplished, you may ask??? Well naturally, you go back to the old tried and true “fake meeting” ploy. It worked once, why not try it again. Did I succeed? Of course! No meeting today, instead, I treated everybody to lunch at Dalton’s, one of their favorite restaurants. [Read more…] about Orthodontic Staff Appreciation Week: Day Two

What is crazy color day, one might ask? Have the colors all gone mad? No, it’s just a randomly selected day each month when we allow our patients to go crazy with their color selection. Some you see below really went crazy and others not so much, but in the end, they all got the colors they wanted, so it’s all good. [Read more…] about Crazy Color Day
