New Year/New World/New Office

Bitmoji picture of a winter background with Drs. Dobie, Remington, and Rollinss

Apparently… everything is new! ๐Ÿ˜„ It is hard to believe that we have arrived at the start of 2022, and the pandemic is still a topic of conversation. It’s a new year and a new world, and for me, this has led to a new office. 2020 saw us in a mandated shutdown for nearly three months. In order to reopen, we had to completely revamp our office space, our office procedures, and our use of PPE. This was a very challenging process as you might imagine.

New Year

Depiction of a calendar with 2021 ending and 2022 beginning

Once the dust settled, a series of conversations with Drs. Dobie and Rollins in Guilford led to the decision to join forces. Was it hard for me to leave my office of over 30 years? Yes it was! But the benefits definitely outweigh any of the necessary changes. This is how we manage our new arrangement… they exclusively treat their patients and I exclusively treat my patients, but we share space, resources, and team members. It’s been aย  match made in heaven. It’s not often that you can find three like-minded orthodontists, bring them together in an office setting, and have such a good outcome as we have! ๐Ÿ˜

In addition to a giving a big shoutout to my new team, I have to give a lot of credit to my orthodontic family as well. Not only did they live through the pandemic shutdown and all that that entailed, but they made the move with me to this new space. Granted, it was only a move of 1.2 miles, but the move was a big one in comfort level, because they too had to (find ๐Ÿ˜… and) adjust to a new space and a new team. I think we have all adjusted magnificently!

I look forward to continuing to practice this way for many years to come. ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—

Masks: The Latest Fashion Accessory

Who knew??? Now that masks have become de rigueur, you can find just about anything you want on a mask… cartoon characters, designer logos, floral designs, sports teams, etc. They can be made to match your outfit, or your mood… but the most important thing about masks, is how well they work.

A recent CNN Article, reports on a study performed at the Duke School of Medicine in which masks were tested for their efficacy.

The best performing masks were the N95 masks (14 above), as one might expect. Procedure masks (1 above) and home made masks (2-10 and 13 above) also performed well. Neck gaiters and bandannas (11 and 12 above) performed the worst with neck gaiters actually increasing the number of respiratory droplets.

Sleep Inertia and the Adolescent

Sleepy Adolescent

What is Sleep Inertia? It’s the feeling you get when you wake suddenly from REM sleep. It causes disorientation and a shaky feeling that can last up to an hour. If you’re sleep deprived (pretty much everyone!), that feeling can remain for two or more hours. That could describe the daily experience of nearly every adolescent you know. Up at dawn, no time for breakfast, off to school, after school sports, lessons, or a job, eat on the run, home late, stay up late doing homework, get a few hours of sleep, and repeat. More News About Direct to Consumer Orthodontic Treatment

3m-clarity-aligners

More news about direct to consumer orthodontic treatment comes from the American Dental Association (ADA). The ADA has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Division of Consumer Protection regarding aspects of the marketing and sales of direct-to-consumer plastic teeth aligners. This follows their citizen’s petition sent in June to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which stated that the public is being put at risk by companies that are knowingly evading the FDA’s “by prescription only” restriction that the agency placed on teeth-aligning materials.
