You may be asking yourself, what is a digital scanner, and why is that exciting news? Our new state-of-the-art scanner takes digital pictures of the teeth and the bite, which eliminates the need for… you guessed it… impressions! Without a doubt, impressions are the one thing that all patients really dread. Well, dread no more, we have the solution!
Without getting too technical, our scanner is integrated with all of our other digital equipment, which means that the digital x-rays, digital photos, and now, digital models all synch with one other to create a unified patient profile. About six months ago, I was thinking about some of the challenges faced by orthodontists on a daily basis. Naturally, there are cases in which the teeth don’t move the way you expect them to, cases where teeth are missing or impacted, and cases with severe crowding of the teeth, all of which can challenge your diagnostic and treatment planning skills, but thankfully, although we do see these things, they are not typically daily issues. It occurred to me that if I could put my finger on the one thing that keeps me up late at night it would be… drum roll please… patients who do not consistently wear their elastics.
I think it’s safe to say that all of us want to look as young as we feel. How can orthodontics help? I’m so glad you asked! The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) is the world’s oldest and largest dental specialty organization. The AAO sponsors research to enable its members to provide the highest quality of care to our patients. Orthodontists receive an additional two to three years of specialized education in orthodontics beyond dental school at an accredited orthodontic residency program. This makes orthodontists uniquely qualified specialists who diagnose, prevent, and treat dental and facial irregularities in patients of all ages to correctly align teeth and jaws.
Once upon a time, the majority of patients seeking orthodontic treatment were adolescents. Today, one in five patients is an adult! Adult orthodontic treatment is here to stay! Multiple treatment options exist including traditional metal braces, clear ceramic braces, and clear acrylic tray aligners (ClearCorrect). How do you know which option is right for you? In 2009, The American Association of Orthodontists introduced the Donated Orthodontic Services (DOS) program in five states. Due to the success of the program, it is now available nationwide. This is an exciting time to be an orthodontist. It’s an even more exciting time to be a woman in dentistry. I attended a conference in Park City, Utah this weekend titled, Women In Dentistry. It was a gathering of women dentists from all over the country. As we stood to introduce ourselves during one of the sessions, we shared some personal and professional goals, including, taking on more leadership roles, providing greater access to dental care, and seeking to both gain, and provide for others, a sense of empowerment.
