That would be an emphatic yes!!! April is National Facial Protection Month, so we focus even more on the reasons you have to wear your mouthguard. As a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the AAO, I want to help make sure my patients and their teammates are properly protected from sports-related injuries to teeth, mouth and face. No one ever plans to get injured. Accidents are unexpected. Being protected is your best option.
That is why I provide all my patients with mouthguards
A 2017 study by the American Association of Orthodontists interviewed 1,000 parents whose children play organized sports about the need for mouthguards:
-
- 99% said youth should be required to wear mouthguards to play, yet 37% admitted their child never wears a mouthguard😥
- 97% said their child would be more likely to wear a mouthguard if they saw more professional athletes wearing them
- 65% reported report that when their child suffered their most recent mouth injury they were not wearing a mouthguard
- Parents estimated the cost to restore a knocked-out or broken permanent tooth at $1,142 – in reality, the costs to treat one knocked-out tooth over a lifetime can range from $5,000 to $20,000😲
This video puts a humorous spin on things that might… I said might… convince your adolescent that mouthguards are a necessary thing. 🤣 It takes a village…
